Crawford Notch, about 15 miles in length and two to four miles in breadth. Two routes lead through it, one by rail and one by road. The rail route winds along the mountainsides, passing over in its course two deep gorges, spanned by Willey Brook Bridge and Frankenstein Trestle, a triumph of engineering skill. Far down the valley lies the site of the Willey House, the scene of a terrible avalanche, which on August 28th, 1826, blotted out the lives of the entire Willey family.
