The Upper Gate to Crawford Notch. Here between the narowly separated mountain walls, the railroad, the carriage road and the infant Saco struggle for passage. The carriage road dips smoothly down into the bowl-like Crawford Notch from this point until it reaches the bottom of the valley, where it follows the ever growing Saco through to Bartlett. Upon a high ledge cut for its passage by its engineers follows also the railroad far above the tree-tops.
