The Gateway to the Crawford Notch. Elephant's Head guards the upper gateway to the Crawford Notch and close by is the idyllic little plateau which holds the Crawford House. Set within surrounding mountain walls, and just at the door fo the famous hosteltry, lies a dainty gem of a lake, which is the true source of the Saco River. At Elephant's Head the notch narrows, allowing scarce room for the railroad, the carriage road and the infant Saco to enter side by side the stupendous notch.
