Upper Gate, Crawford Notch, is about fifteen miles in length and from two to four miles in breadth. Two routes lead through it, one by rail and one by carriage road. Near the Crawford House portal lies a small lake, the source of the Saco River, which flows east through the Notch toward the Atlantic. AFter penetrating the cleft on the mountain side, vast mountains with amazing grandeur surround you on all sides. Far above are seen glistening torrents which come pouring over the rocks into Pearl and Crystal Cascades to the river below.
