In 1882 Vermont's new Woodstock Railroad traded the first No. 1 "A. G. Dewey" for the second, seen here. The second Dewey had been the Passumpsic Railroad's "Newport," a 4-4-0 engine, built by the Rhode Island Locomotive Company (No. 416) in 1872. With its brass steam chests always polished and its oil headlight painted with local scenes and surmounted by a golden eagle, the Dewey was the pride of the line. An illustration from "Over the Hills to Woodstock" by Edgar T. Mead, Jr., from the Shortline Railroad Series published by The Stephen Greene Press.
