No. 3 "J. G. Porter," seen here posed on a turntable, was considered the best engine the Woodstock Railroad ever owned. A 55 ton 4-4-0 type, it was bought new for $9,000 in 1906 from the well-known American Locomotive Company of Manchester, New Hampshire. The Woodstock men had a hand in the design and specifications, which may have added to its success - and endearment. An illustration from 'Over the Hills to Woodstock' by Edgar T. Mead, Jr., from the Shortline Railroad Series published by The Stephen Greene Press.
