A three-car train of center-entrance cars approaches Coolidge Corner on the Beacon Street Line. The cars, also known as Crowd Eaters, were the mainstay of service on the Boston transit system until World War II. Among their unusual features was the arrangement of the trolley poles, which enabled the conductor to place the pole on the wire without leaving the car.
