Most street railways, in addition to their passenger equipment, had a number of cars used for maintenance and construction purposes. Line car S-71 forerly was owned by the Bay State Street Railway and its successor, the Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway, and was used by crews making repairs on the trolley wire. Said to have originally been a snow plow, S-71 was assigned as different times to Salem and Gloucester, Massachusetts, and was last used on the Eastern Mass. line between Spot Pond, Medford, and Stoneham. It still is used for wire work at the Seashore Trolley Museum, which acquired the car in 1947.
