Starting out in life as horsecar No. 804 of the Metropolitan Railroad of Boston, No. 724 became the property of the West End Street Railway in 1887. It was electrified in 1892, and its original 16-foot body was lengthened to 20 feet. Equipped with vestibules during the 1901-1905 period, it was revamped to a wrecker or breakdown car in 1912, and was changed to a rail grinder in 1935. It is the last surviving former Boston horsecar.
