A gift to the Museum in 1957 by the Mayor of Rome (Italy), No. 279 was the oldest tram running in the Eternal City. Even after its donation, it continued to operate in regular service until a sponsor could be found to bring it to Maine. Refinished in the two-tone green livery still standard in Rome, it continues to sport the city's emblem with the famed initials "S.P.Q.R."
