With the recent talk about the forthcoming demolition of the Lawrence station, I hauled myself over to take some photos before it's gone. The station was built in the early 1930's. It consolidated several other stations in town: South Lawrence/Andover Street, North Lawrence/Broadway, and a small central depot at the other end of the Casey/Central bridge along Lawrence and Canal Streets. Parker Street was originally an at-grade crossing, but the 1930's depot project included lowering the street below grade and building a railroad bridge. Those bridges were eventually replaced in 2021. After the railroad vacated and sold the depot, the building received a second floor mezzanine in the former waiting area, and hosted many different private companies, including a bakery, a taxi stand, attorneys' offices, apparel, etc. Sadly the depot has been vandalized and tagged since it was completely vacated a few years ago. Too much snow around the building to get to the other side and the back, but the back has been totally altered, with the big windows filled in with concrete block years ago, and an addition added behind the Express annex. As James V. Roy recently posted, it is planned that this site will be redeveloped into multi-unit housing.
